How to Train Fiber Sales Reps
Management
Fiber selling is teachable in two weeks, provided the training is a system rather than a shadowing shrug. Ours: a days-long classroom foundation across four layers (product, process, compliance, territory craft), then two weeks of paired field coaching, then permanent funnel-based coaching. Most reps with zero sales background close their first orders in week one; we’ve run 100+ reps through this system since February 2026.
Principle: train the system, hire the temperament
You cannot train drive or coachability, so recruit for those and train everything else. Sales experience is genuinely optional; much of our leadership started with none. What kills new reps is un-drilled fundamentals colliding with early rejection, not a lack of talent. The training’s job is to make week one survivable and week three profitable.
Layer 1: Product (honest and plain-language)
A rep who can’t explain fiber simply will hide behind pricing. Teach what fiber physically is, why a dedicated line behaves differently at 8pm than shared coax, what symmetrical upload means in a homeowner’s actual life, and what fiber doesn’t fix, because honest limits at the door prevent cancels later. Test it: a rep should explain fiber to a non-technical person in under a minute. (The comparison that anchors it →)
Layer 2: Process (structure, not scripts)
Drill the five-stage doorstep structure: opener, discovery, benefit core, price frame, assumptive close (the pitch). Add the five objections and drill until responses are reflexive. Roleplay aloud, in pairs, daily; artificial practice is where natural doorstep delivery comes from. Include the unglamorous mechanics: order entry, install scheduling, callback logging. Fumbling the tablet at the close loses real orders.
Layer 3: Compliance (non-negotiable and tested)
Permits, disclosures, do-not-knock lists, truthful representation of the provider. Test it formally and enforce it permanently: one rep’s shortcut is the whole team’s market access. This layer is also self-interest, cleanly aligned: commissions claw back on early cancels, so honest selling is literally the highest-paying kind.
Layer 4: The field (where training actually happens)
Pair every new rep with a team lead for two weeks:
- Days 1-2: watch. The lead works doors; the rookie observes real conversations, including the rejections.
- Days 3-7: attempt. The rookie knocks, the lead observes and debriefs between doors. First orders usually land here.
- Week 2: own it. The rookie runs their own turf; the lead reviews the funnel nightly.
Give trainees real territory with real opportunity. Scraps teach hopelessness, not selling.
After onboarding: coach the funnel, not the vibes
Ongoing coaching runs off numbers, because the funnel diagnoses precisely (the KPI stack):
- Low knocks → schedule and effort conversation.
- Knocks fine, conversations low → timing and approach.
- Conversations fine, orders low → ride-along; drill the pitch stage that’s leaking.
Daily huddles carry one skill focus each; weekly 1-on-1s review each rep against their own trailing average. And blitz immersion is the graduate school: two weeks selling beside your best closers changes a rep faster than any classroom (how blitzes run).
The measure of a training system
Not how polished the slides are, but how fast a coachable stranger becomes a professional at a door. Ours is measured the same way everything else here is: in the production data (methodology).
